AFA the melody thing, well, Toto had it going on there, too...it just wasnt as 'obvious' as the Jrny maybe, & partly because of lesser US exposure...but I remember when Toto, Asia, & Jrny were just ragin' HUGE on the charts back in the 80's...

Oh yeah. Keep On Ruunnin' was a cool tune off Escape too.

Perry's vox on Mother, Father are practically untouchable 80's pop-rock crooning. AbsoLUTEly untouchable.

[Toto had some great singers AW...Kimb, Williams, Byron]...
Schon's solo in there is a rock styling mofro too.
The drum fills speak for themselves.

Everytime I hear this song it sends shivers up my spine.

Just dont try to listen to it in mp3 on your PC while trying to po-po-po-post h-h-h-here at the sa-sa-same t-t-time...

the thing about journey for me, was the undeniable trio of s. perry's undeniably identifiable voice, n. schon's hooky riffs and solos (i can still sing along to his solos, they were a song unto themselves) and jonathan cain's wonderful melodies. then steve smith created a strong undertow along w/ r. valory that complemented the songs so well. just a winning combination, really.

i must say that they were my favorite band growing up in the 80's. what a HUGE influence. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I always dug Smith's tom pattern on "Back Talk". On Escape & Frontiers, the "album cuts" were far more interesting than the hits IMO.

But I've often found that a band's "second-line" [aka non-top-40-chart album track hits] were indeed better selections than the hits themselves...& often less "watered down" for the so-called "3 minute mentality [img]wink.gif[/img] "...which that whole idea kind of irks me...but we all know the fact is it's a commercial/selling x amt of #'s / volume game...squeezing & getting the best bang for the buck

Remember the 70s & into the very early 80s when they'd sometimes play ENTIRE album sides?!! And entire ALBUMS?! Remember the more-than-3&1/2 min song?! Back in the Renaissance Period?!! [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img] Bring it back!!

MTV could've been a real revolutionary social & musical statement, but like many things that big corps that have little to do w real music & more about the sales get involved with, evolved into a total crap-churn. IMO it's personally responsible for much of the true, real music-industry "crisis"...

Net radio, indy labels, & personal music [& archives] libraries are where it's at!! [img]tongue.gif[/img]
